The musical “Cinderella” runs at the Esplanade Theatre next month, and I am not going to miss it for the world.
It’s features a Rodgers & Hammerstein score, plus the most beautiful female voice in the world (Lea Salonga)…so how could I miss it??
Anyway, since I’ve already bought my tickets, I decided to do a bit [...]

Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs
Wednesday, 17 December, 2008
I recently caught “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs”, the hilarious Christmas pantomime put up by local theatre group W!ld Rice, at the Drama Centre Theatre.
I’ve been an avid follower of W!ld Rice’s productions over the years, hence I couldn’t afford to miss this latest installment.
“Snow White” is directed by first-time director Hossan Leong, with [...]
Avenue Q - Sesame Street Meets South Park
Saturday, 8 November, 2008
Yup, I think that’s the best way to describe it.
The puppets closely resemble Sesame Street in appearance and demeanour, but the humour is definitely of the South Park variety.
I thought the lyrics were incredibly witty (well, you wouldn’t expect anything less from a Tony award-winning musical would you?), and the music was highly functional, though [...]
I Think We’re Trying Too Hard
Tuesday, 2 September, 2008
What’s with all these arts-related festivals these few months?
I mean, we had the Singapore Arts Festival back in May/June, we had the OCBC Singapore Theatre Festival that just concluded last month, we had Baybeats over the weekend, our Singapore Biennale ‘08 is starting in less than 2 weeks’ time, and today I learn that there [...]
Five Foot Broadway Mini Musicals
Tuesday, 17 June, 2008
…
A few months ago there was a nationwide invitation by local organisation Musical Theatre Limited for submission of “mini musicals” under 15 minutes in length. The winning entries would be professionally staged at the Esplanade this month.
Being an aspiring Broadway composer, I almost attempted to write a mini musical for submission through collaborating with a [...]
“My Fair Lady” Was Not Written By Rodgers & Hammerstein!
Wednesday, 21 May, 2008
I think I might go crazy the next time I hear someone say that “My Fair Lady” was written by Rodgers & Hammerstein.
It was not.
The book and lyrics were written by Alan Jay Lerner, and the music was composed by Frederick Loewe. See (here).
Now you know what NOT to say whenever you see me, haha!
Art And Music
Monday, 28 April, 2008
To me, art is all about expression.
Art exists because human beings will always need to find a way to express their feelings and emotions.
It could be through writing, dance, painting, photography, scuplture, theatre, design, etc.
For me, I find music, and particularly songwriting to be an excellent way to express my innermost feelings.
I find that writing a song allows me [...]
“The Musical Theatre Writer’s Survival Guide”
Tuesday, 8 April, 2008
The book I’m currently reading is “The Musical Theatre Writer’s Survival Guide”, which came in my latest Amazon package.
I’ve only just started on it, but it seems like a fascinating read already.
The author clearly knows of what he speaks.
This isn’t exactly your typical “how to put together a musical” kind of book. It goes farther [...]
“Jukebox Musicals”
Thursday, 6 March, 2008
It’s sad, so sad.
It’s a sad, sad situation.
And it’s getting more and more absurd.
There was this article in Tuesday’s New Paper on the current trend in Broadway and West End musicals called “jukebox musicals” which I thought was really interesting.
You can read it from the link below:
“Who’s Afraid of Pop Musicals?”
The term “jukebox musicals” basically [...]
Say “No” To Piracy
Thursday, 28 February, 2008
It was widely reported that in the first 2 weeks of Microsoft Vista’s launch in China last year, only a total of 244 genuine copies were sold.
Can you believe that? It’s one of the most amazing pieces of news I’ve read!
