I have been slowly working my way through the book “One Day” by David Nicholls, of which the recent movie starring Anne Hathaway was based on.
As I’m an outrageously slow reader, I’ve only covered a small portion of the book, although I’ve always believed that one should not take too long to finish a book, otherwise the experience would seem more diluted as compared to if you were to finish the book in, say, less than a week.
Anyway, Dr Seet was absolutely right – the book is even better than the film.
I’ve only finished a quarter of the book but already I’m beginning to think that it’s an excellent book, full of incredibly clever and funny writing.
I think Emma in the book is such an amazingly funny woman.
A lot of the essence of the writing was unable to come through in the film version, due to the limitations of the film medium.
My favourite line from the book thus far comes from page 9 when Dexter, who was in Emma’s apartment and taking in the surroundings, muses to himself that “the problem with these fiercely individualistic girls was that they were all exactly the same”.
Brilliant stuff.
