(Above video is not mine. Found it on the net. But it was from the Singapore concert on Saturday night.)
I am not the world’s biggest Faye Wong fan, but when I was offered a free ticket by a very dear friend of mine, I immediately jumped at it.
One does not pass up an opportunity to attend a Faye Wong concert under any circumstances.
Turns out the ticket was worth $480(!!), and we had pretty good stall seats.
My knowledge of Faye Wong songs can be considered serviceable at best, having owned her “Greatest Hits” album.
Just for the record, my all-time favourite Faye Wong songs are “天使”, “红豆” and this perhaps not so well-known song called “誓言”.
Firstly, let me just say that I think Faye Wong still looks as beautiful as ever.
She might look ever so slightly aged considering she is 42 after all, but let there be no mistake that she is still as beautiful a singer as you can find anywhere.
She obviously can still command an audience, as evidenced by the sell-out crowd on Saturday night.
Her voice is still very good, and she can still reach the high notes, although I would venture to postulate that her voice might have lost a little bit of lustre from when she was in her prime (but then again, age does that to everyone).
And as expected, she did not make a single attempt at banter with the crowd, and the only non-singing words she uttered throughout the concert were the occasional “谢谢” and that was it.
But this is the Faye Wong that we know, and this is the Faye Wong that we love.
For some reason, I felt her best costumes (and the best stage sets for that matter) came at the first portion of the show.
My absolute favourite moment of the entire show was when she did the song “天使” (video above) somewhere around 4 or 5 songs into the set.
The familiarity with the gorgeous melody (one of my favourites), with her pristine vocals, with her resplendent red dress, with the way she sashayed, with the way the dress fluttered gracefully a la Monroe, with the amazing visual display of vibrant colours on stage, with the falling of the confetti…ah, it doesn’t get any better than this.
The video above doesn’t even begin to give you an idea of the actual live experience.
I think I know why people attend concerts.
For moments like these.
