Sports Oddities

Sometimes I watch those old sports clips on YouTube, such as say the Bulls-Suns NBA Finals of 1993, and I’ve always wondered – why did they not have a permanent scoreboard on the TV screen back in those days?

Nowadays you turn on any game on TV, and immediately you want to look for the scoreboard somewhere at the corner of the screen.

Didn’t anybody back in the old days feel the need to know the score at all times?

Was it really so difficult to flash a permanent scoreboard up on the screen back in the ’90s?

This is something that I could never really wrap my head around.

I mean, yeah…I started watching sports back in the early ’90s, and this was never really a big issue to me back then.

I admit I never thought of it that much back then.

But now when I think back to that era of “scoreboard-less” sports on TV, I wonder – how did we ever get by with that back in those days?

And this doesn’t just apply to NBA.

Same goes for NFL, or even Premiership games and World Cup games.

They never flashed the scoreboard until there was a change in the score.

It’s amazing how, thinking back, things seemed so inconvenient back in the 80′s and ’90s, but we never really felt that way when we were actually living in that era.

Nowadays I wonder how we used to survive in an era of no internet, no cable TV, no handphones, and no pagers.

But we still got by.
