I don’t usually talk much football, but it seems the England-Germany game actually lived up to its billing, so I thought I’d just drop my few cents worth.
I actually went for a jog this evening and started watching the match at around the 30min mark, so that shows you how much of a football fan I really am.
Germany was already up 1-0 by then.
Some thoughts:
1) Firstly, I felt that the English were thoroughly outclassed by the Germans.
They were inferior in almost every aspect, and were found wanting on many occasions.
I don’t think anyone could put together a convincing argument that the Germans didn’t deserve to win.
Kudos to the German team for the victory.
A classy display by an impressive team.
The Germans brought their A-game tonight.
England, sadly, were neither hungry enough nor competent enough to beat them.
2) The Lampard disallowed goal?
I like how one YouTube commenter (a German fan) put it: “Dear England, your goal today should have counted. You should have lost 4-2 instead of 4-1.”
Well said.
In some ways I’m glad it ended 4-1, because had it been any closer, a lot of people would have clung on to the “if only our goal wasn’t disallowed” argument, which frankly, is now a moot point when you take into account the gulf in standard between the two teams.
As for the whole business of the “Geoff Hurst goal in the 1966 Final”, you really have to love the whole symmetry between the two events.
You know what they say about karma.
3) Let the condemnation in the English media begin.
You know it is coming.
It’s sad, yes, but England were probably lucky to have gotten this far in the World Cup, to be honest.
They have done very little in 4 games to convince anyone that they truly deserve to be in the latter stages of the tournament.
