Thoughts On Sumiko’s Marriage

It’s not every day that Singapore’s most famous female columnist gets married, so I thought I’d milk it for all it’s worth.

I’ve been getting mad hits on this blog since this morning like you won’t believe, all searching for “Sumiko Tan” and “Hurricane”.

Seems like she’s still a very popular figure here in Singapore.

Love her or hate her, you just can’t ignore her.

Anyway, I only just got home late tonight and managed to read the entire cover story on Sumiko’s marriage.

Some thoughts:

1) You know you’re somebody when news of your impending marriage is a Friday Life! cover story. (Couldn’t they just have waited till the Sunday Times?)

Cool huh?

Anyway, she’s built for herself a cult following over the years, so I guess she’s entitled to it.

But not everybody is pleased with the blatant coverage though.

2) “Hurricane’s” real name is Quek Suan Shiau, and he is an electrician and chess teacher based in Britain.

Well, you know what they say about chess players…they make good mates.

Ok bad joke.

(I can hear the cringing already.)

Moving on…

3) “Hurricane” (I still like to call him “Hurricane”) got divorced early last year, and last July he came to Singapore. There were two former female friends he thought of calling, but he couldn’t find the contact number of girl No. 1, so he managed to eventually hook up with girl No. 2 – Sumiko.

Ok, I shan’t elaborate too much on this, but I just found this point rather awkward.

4) Sumiko made it clear repeatedly that she was not looking to be in a relationship with “Hurricane”. She was just in it as friends.

Well, I guess she eventually caved in, didn’t she?

Good news for all guys out there: If a girl says repeatedly that she’s not looking for a relationship and that she’s just in it as friends…it doesn’t necessarily mean that she’s not looking for a relationship and that she’s just in it as friends.

Girls are strange.

Can never figure them out.

5) From what I understand from the article, “Hurricane” asked Sumiko to be his girlfriend (she agreed) then immediately proposed to her, all in one fell swoop.

This is amazing stuff.

In one fell swoop, Sumiko agreed to both be his girlfriend then become his wife.

So I guess their boyfriend-girlfriend relationship lasted all of…fifteen seconds?

Which isn’t exactly a bad thing, don’t get me wrong.

I just found it quite unique and unusual.

In conclusion, as always…congrats to the both of you! =)

  1. Sumiko Tan is Singapore’s very own Carrie Bradshaw! :D

    P.S U’re really corny…”mates” n “whirlwind”, haha

  2. Haha! It’s fun to be corny sometimes.

  3. haha…i liked the “mate” joke.

Point 4 – I think if “Hurricane” didn’t do anything, they’ll really “just be friends”?

Anyway, why was he called “Hurricane” again?

  4. Oh I think it’s because he reminded her of some actor in some movie called “Hurricane”. (This was many, many years ago I believe.)

    • haha…I thought she had some “premonition” of a “whirlwind romance”.

Maybe we should be careful of what we nickname people.

  5. As for your mention of the Point 4…

Well, yeah. Obviously if “Hurricane” didn’t do anything, they would really just be friends. But I’m quite sure Sumiko Tan was suspecting that “Hurricane” would be doing something, that’s why she repeatedly stated that she wanted to just be friends. But I guess she caved in in the end.

But I guess it’s all’s well that ends well huh?
