Dreams Do Come True

This is breaking news so I thought I’d better post my thoughts on it.

Earlier today my friend messaged me telling me that Sumiko Tan is getting married (here), to which I replied “No wonder I’ve been getting so many hits on my blog today for searches on ‘Sumiko Tan’!”

Well, the reason why this blog has been getting a number of hits for searches on our dear friend Sumiko is because my posts in response to a number of her past columns have been well-documented on this blog.

You can check out this post (here) for a good background on what’s been happening.

Ok, on to my post proper.

Reaction

My very first reaction to hearing that she is going to get married was one of joy and happiness.

I am truly happy for her for having found her one true love at the age of 46 when it seemed like all hope was lost long ago.

Indeed, it is always a happy occasion whenever a person announces that he or she is going to get married.

Let’s face it folks, Sumiko Tan’s column is Singapore’s favourite and most well-known real-life soap opera.

Her musings on life, and especially on love, or the lack of it, have been well-documented in the Sunday Times.

We all read her columns because she’s the only one who dares to bare her soul to the nation.

Very few things in life resonate better with an audience than someone telling the world that she has not been able to find true love.

Sumiko wasn’t afraid to tell Singapore about her inability to find a life partner and her immense regret that she may have missed the proverbial boat.

Does she tend to play it up a bit too much in her columns?

Definitely.

That’s what writers do.

But we still love her anyway.

Dreams Do Come True

I’m looking at this from another angle.

So now we all know that “Hurricane”, who was once Sumiko’s crush in ACJC, is finally going to marry her after the both of them reunited with each other in July last year.

It was about 30 years in the making, but she finally married her one-time crush from JC.

Who says dreams don’t come true?

I’ve always believed that one should always be careful of what one wishes for in life, because you just might marry the person you once longed for.

It happens, sometimes.

Of course, life probably has a greater share of disappointments than otherwise, but it’s always fantastic when dreams actually do come true.

The problem is…when it really happens, are you ready for it?

Are you always ready for what you wish for?

I have realised that lot of times in life, I have found myself not being ready for something that I had wished for.

Wanting something is one matter.

Being ready for it when (or if) it happens is another matter altogether.

Conclusion

Anyway, in conclusion, I guess this puts an end to Singapore’s longest-running real-life soap opera.

It’s the equivalent to the season finale of “LOST” or what have you.

Maybe even better.

Cos it’s the fairy-tale ending which we all would have loved to see, but that few of us ever thought would materialise.

But anyhow, it has happened, and Sumiko Tan is going to marry “Hurricane”, and I am happy for them and wish them all the best.

This is definitely no “whirlwind romance”. (Geddit?? “Hurricane”??)

It was 30 years in the making.

I think the most important question to ask now is this: Now that Sumiko Tan is going to be happily married next month, who is still going to read anything from the Sunday Times anymore?!?

=)

  1. Finally we can attach a face to Hurricane… Haha… you are right that it’s like one big soap opera… and I am a fan of it!!! :p

  2. Haha, people in my office were also talking about this today. I have to say, I’m happy for her!

  3. Chin Hon: =)

Elaine: Yup, “happy for her” is still the best way to put it.

  4. Sumiko, Congratulations for the next milestone… getting married is a blessing and staying happily married is a challenge. Dear lady you are one of the icon in Sunday Times and sure hope that you continue to write about your thoughts on marriage, staying married and “what if I did not marry” states.
Your views though sometime trivial but thought provoking and we do need to be side-tracked at times to know that getting back on track is still the best.

  5. [...] blogger, Jeremy Yew, says this about her: “Let’s face it folks, Sumiko Tan’s column is Singapore’s favourite [...]

  6. I am happy that you are married now. You should have a family of your own like most people – a husband to love and cherish and kids of your own too – if God gives.
