Updates

A few friends have been asking me if I’m turning into a playwright this year.

This is in light of what I posted recently about being exceedingly thrilled at having been selected in the Top 40 for “Short+Sweet Singapore”.

Well, the simple answer is NO.

Yes, I’ve been immersed in theatre this year and have been actively catching local theatre productions.

But ultimately, as I mentioned, I entered “Short+Sweet” as a challenge to myself to see if I could write a decent script.

Because my overriding aim is still to be able to write (and hopefully stage) a small-sized musical soon.

The musical is still the end goal, because that’s what I really want to do.

The songs I would definitely want to write.

As for the libretto, well…at least now I’m a teeny bit more confident that if I can’t find a librettist to work with, at least I could possibly attempt to write my own libretto.

And as for songwriting, what have I been up to lately?

Well, a lot of my friends probably don’t know this, but I have been very active in songwriting and composition this year…but for my church.

I don’t think I’ve written many (or any) songs this year outside of church, but I’ve written a handful of songs which I’m really pleased with for the children’s choir in my church.

So yeah, I have still been actively working on my songwriting, but mainly for church.

And I’m very thankful to God for allowing me to come up with what I’ve come up with this year thus far.

That’s why I mentioned this before, and that is that I feel that I usually need a purpose to write songs.

Writing songs for the church, especially for special occasions, is a very valid purpose for me to push myself to work on new songs, and I always relish the challenges, tough as they may be.

Writing songs for a musical is also a very valid purpose to me, because you are writing a piece of music and lyric to help move the story along.

However, I realise that I usually have very little impetus to write stand-alone songs, and that’s why I haven’t written any such songs yet this year.

Oh yeah, Samuel! Forgot that you know him as well. He’s also been very active with the youth in our church in many aspects, including music as well. =)
