Good Friday Song

Two nights ago I was quite inspired to write a new song for Good Friday service (since Christmas Eve service was already over), so I decided to sit at the piano and work on it.

I always like to write way in advance.

I actually came up with three different song “concepts” that night (much like how a designer comes up with “concepts”, haha!).

Didn’t really like the other two, so I decided to stick with the one that I liked best.

Currently it’s almost done, and I’m starting to add a bit more embellishments and working out the structure and arrangement…but I’m still taking a few more days to scrutinise the entire song and see if I really like it or not.

(I always give a new song a few days, and I’ll try to be as critical as I can about it and decide if it’s worth pursuing or should be written off.)

I’m currently writing a flute part for it as well, so it’s going to be piano and flute (and children’s choir of course).

It’s been awhile since I wrote a flute part.

I always enjoy writing for flute accompaniment with piano. I think a flute is a piano’s best friend, not a guitar.

I just think that flute goes very well with piano. (And violin isn’t too far off either.)

And it so happens I know of at least four flautists in my church, of which I have been working closely with one of them for a number of songs.

So in that way, I feel very blessed and thank God for it.

It’s great to know that you have musicians to work with.

  1. You write for flute too?

  2. Well, yeah. Simple parts only. Basically just a one melodic line thing, as an accompaniment to the piano. Just to make the song a bit more interesting. I like the beauty of the flute sound.
