I recently ordered the sheet music to John Williams’ “Greatest Hits”.
It was fun playing through some of the themes, but the transcriptions were mostly quite difficult.
My favourite?
It is the theme from “Hook” called “Flight to Neverland” (above).
Definitely my favourite John Williams theme of all, by far.
(According to some fans, this is one of John Williams’ best works.)
Have been having a challenging time trying to learn the score, but it’s really exhilarating being able to actually play through a John Williams score, as if all the magic of the score is at your fingertips.
That is if you can master the score lah…which I haven’t been able to do so yet.
Too difficult.
Indeed it’s really difficult, although a great piece! I sense a lot of Williams there, he printed his composing style; you can easily recognize a lot of his works. But, as a personal opinion, as easily recognizable his pieces are, also tends to follow the same pattern and resources. I don’t mean he SHOULD and MUST “change the style over time” but variety, even in orchestral compositions and classical music, gives the most of the composer. I’m not saying he repeat himself, not at all, but well, you can see how he likes to walk through the same path a few times a day.
Cheers!
Nice insight. Thanks for sharing, Nic!
