I just read that Singapore will open its fourth public-funded university soon.

Which is cool.

What isn’t cool, however, is the choice of name.

It’s called the “Singapore University of Technology and Design” and according to the CNA article, its acronyms are “SU”.

Now I have a few issues with this.

Firstly, if it’s called “Singapore University of Technology and Design”, why initial it as only SU?

I dunno about you, but I would feel weird if I told someone I’m from “S.U.”.

Secondly, if you want to give it its full acronym, then it would be “S.U.T.D”.

I dunno about you, but I would also feel weird if I told someone I’m from “S.U.T.D.”.

(I’m sorry, but I was recently playing this anagram game on iPhone so I’m now obsessed with anagrams.)

Why not arrange the name of the university in these ways?

Here are my suggestions:

1) Since the university is quite design focussed, why not name it “Singapore Design University”? Then its acronym would be “SDU”.

2) If you wanna be a bit more adventurous, why not name it “Singapore Technological University of Design”? Then its acronym would be “STUD”.

I think these might be slightly more suitable names don’t you think? =)
