Thoughts On F1 Thus Far

I don’t know if you noticed, but all the action during Sunday’s race in Valencia basically took place in the pits.

Barrichello jumped Kovalainen on the first pitstop, then jumped Lewis on the second one…effectively sealing the win from third place at the start.

I’m not sure if this is something I should be excited about.

I can’t even remember one single legitimate on-track overtaking move the entire race.

This season is turning into a really bland and forgettable one.

It just lacks the drama, the tension, the charisma of the last few seasons. (Remember the infamous Lewis-Alonso feud in ’07? And the intriguing battle royale between Lewis and Massa in ’08…right down to the wire?)

Yes, you had the early-season feel-good story of the resurgence of Jenson Button and how he was threatening to become the runaway championship leader of ’09.

Then the wheels started to fall off the Brawn bandwagon, and the Red Bulls suddenly became hot.

And now it seems the McLarens have joined the party too…which means Jenson might find himself with a fight on his hands as the season draws to its conclusion.

But you know what? This season might be “interesting”, it might be “entertaining”…but it’s a far cry from being a gripping season.

It’s just too weird a season, to be honest.

No one is used to seeing traditional powerhouses like McLaren or Ferrari struggle to even keep pace with teams like Red Bull or (gasp!) Brawn.

It’s just too warped a concept to grasp, which makes this season kind of a “distorted reality” experience, in my opinion.

All the traditional benchmarks that we’re used to are out the window.

I’m prepared to write this season off as a sideshow, an afterthought in the annals of Formula 1 history.

Not that I won’t watch the remaining races. I’ll still watch them, but with hardly any vested interest.

Whatsmore, my favourite current driver Massa is out for the entire season anyway.

And talk of Schumi (my all-time favourite driver) making a comeback this season has effectively been quashed too.

Here’s hoping for a good race at Spa!
