I’ve slowly started to get hooked on the local reality show “S Factor”.
It can be rather intriguing at times. I’ll give you an example:
Yesterday, they ran this experiment which I thought was really interesting.
Basically the four girls Kay Kay, Jessica, Michelle and Sherine (NB: Sonia and Xue Sha were granted “immunity” for this test) would take turns to chat up (and hopefully impress) two guys, like how they would chat with guys at a club.
But the big difference is that the guys would be blindfolded throughout the conversations and cannot see what the girls look like…which means looks count for NOTHING in this test.
And at the end, the girls which impress the two guys the most based on the conversations will get through to the next round.
So it’s really interesting.
Cos I dare say all of these girls (all the contestants in the show are described as “hot” by the way) have always been accustomed to using their looks to get them through in life, especially in social situations.
Good looks are definitely a very very strong asset in social situations, especially if you’re female.
So what happens now that their strongest asset has been taken away from them?
Suddenly, they might seem a little bit helpless, and they would have to use all their wits to summon their other assets (such as their personality), which may have been seldom used, in order to impress the two guys.
It’s very interesting, cos now they’re forced to be personable.
You can watch the clips above to see how it panned out.
…
Competitive Advantages and Attraction
I think it works this way:
The human race competes for survival.
It’s always a case of “survival of the fittest” in anything – be it securing a high-paying job, or aceing the exams, or even (or should I say “especially”) when it comes to finding a mate.
You compete in whatever way you can, using whatever competitive advantage you have.
Some have it in the form of brains, some in the form of looks, some in the form of physique, some in the form of talent, some in the form of personality, etc.
Obviously, when it comes to finding a mate…because guys are visual creatures, if you’re an attractive-looking female you have plenty of competitive advantage.
That’s why I’ve always held the opinion that highly attractive girls tend to NOT have competitive advantages in many other things (e.g. personality, talent), simply because they don’t need to.
When you’re pretty, you can get by in life on a lot of things. You don’t feel that you need to spend time developing your other facets.
That’s why I personally don’t think that highly attractive girls necessarily have the best personalities.
In fact I always feel that, based on my observations, looks in girls tends to be inversely proportional to their personalities.
It is usually the less attractive girls that are more friendly, more personable, more ready to smile, more forgiving, and more patient.
Highly attractive girls, or girls who think that they are highly attractive, tend to think that their looks are enough to carry them through…hence they wouldn’t need to try too hard to please nor would they feel the need to try to engage you with their personality.
Same goes for guys. It applies to all human beings, to be honest.
Because time is finite, and there are only so many hours in a day…we cannot possibly hope to work on every facet of ourselves. We have to prioritise when it comes to possessing a competitive advantage.
I don’t think anyone can seriously have the time to try to work on every single competitive advantage. After awhile, you’d realise where you are strong in and just focus on that.
And that’s my theory on competitive advantage.
“Vases” don’t last (on their own). Colour fades, design gets outdated, etc.
The beauty of “vases” is enhanced by what goes inside.
Oh, I have to totally agree with what you said. Very true indeed!
Ok, after 5 mins I couldn’t help but stop the video. It’s disgusting!
But I can see why guys can sit through the whole show and give the thumbs-up, bleah.
This show is good for sociological studies on the Female species, though ;p
Hmmm, I’m curious…why do you find it disgusting? I thought it was quite watchable what.
The “debate” episode a few weeks ago…yeah I felt that one was unwatchable. But I felt the two clips above were quite watchable what!
How come you find it disgusting leh?
I think the worst part was when Sherine did the “touch face” thing.
Michelle was the better conversationalist, though 1 of the guys was intimidated by her.
Found Kay Kay rather fake though.
Actually, this episode is good for sociological studies on the male species. Both guys seemed to have differing views though.
Yeah the “touching face” part was the most cringe-worthy, in my opinion!
