MCYS Says: Don’t Dream Of The Perfect Life Partner, Lower Your Expectations!

Interesting news from MCYS – Apparently they’ve commissioned for a new TV commercial to be made (above), and this commercial seeks to celebrate the “imperfections” in a relationship.

According to the Straits Times (here), “the ad is a move to get singles here to go beyond waiting for the perfect partner.”

In other words, to put it plainly, I think they’re actually saying: “Lower your expectations, people! Girls should stop dreaming of marrying Orlando Bloom (the LOTR version), and guys should stop dreaming of landing Megan Fox.”

The best things in life may be free…but you can be sure someone’s taken it long before you have.

But anyway, I’m not sure: Is this the real reason why there are more and more people NOT getting married in Singapore? Is it because everyone’s expectations are too high?

Is it because we’re all too enamoured with the Hollywood notion of love and romance that we think it also applies to real life in Singapore?

Or is it because we’re all so used to the highest standards here in Singapore such that we feel it should apply to relationships as well?

I dunno, perhaps.

Perhaps that’s why some people choose to be (or are) single…because they’ve not met anyone in their life whom they feel has met up to their expectations of what a life partner should be.

So maybe this MCYS campaign is quite pertinent after all.

  1. i like this ad :)

  2. OMG! This actually moved me to tears!

However, I felt that this was closer to a family ad (treasure your loved ones) video than what was written if you had not mentioned it.

Nobody’s perfect. I think the little imperfections makes each person unique and that makes the person perfect…nobody else is like him/her right? Flaws actually endear & a couple will complement each other.

  3. i dun think anyone’s looking for the PERFECT partner la…. if so..he/she should wake up frm his/her dreamland

  4. Hmm…ya. No one’s looking for the perfect partner, but hopes who he/she has found is the perfect one.

  5. Lingfeng: Hmmm…that’s kind of contradictory isn’t it?

  6. haha…maybe.

More like referring to he/she knows that there’s no “perfect partner” (fantasy) so he/she doesn’t exactly look for one. But when it comes to reality, he/she will “hope” that the person with him/her is the perfect one for him/her.

ok…i think this explanation is getting nowhere.

    Perfection in imperfection?

  7. Most importantly, there must be chemistry between the 2 people. It’s not about meeting the perfect one but rather meeting the right one. The right one does not necessary have to be perfect.

  8. but doesn’t the right one mean the perfect one for you?

  9. Oh wow…that is exactly the same question I was going to ask!

  10. haha…looks like there’s a lot of contradictions going on here.

  11. No my friends. Right one doesn’t have to be the perfect one. It could mean that the person is very suitable for you and you for him/her. Spirituality, communication etc…..

  12. hmm…thought the perfect one for you is the one that is perfectly suited to you, which would be the right one.

  13. Actually, something just came to mind. If we’re looking for the “perfect” one, are we ourselves “perfect” for this perfect one?

  14. I think it’s how you see it. Perfect does not equal right one for me.

Lingfeng, don’t ever doubt yourself whether you are “perfect” for another person. Coz it’s an age old myth that held me back for years.

Coz 幸福的开始就是放手去爱 (the start of a happiness is letting go & to start loving)

  15. eh…actually, my statement wasn’t relating to myself.
It’s more like if both parties are the right ones for each other (both ways).
I was actually recalling something I read before. About besides expecting the other person to be the “perfect one”, we ourselves must prepare ourselves to be the same for who it is that God has planned for us.

  16. Yes. What you mention is biblically correct.

But who will determine when you reach “perfection”? God, yourself or your friends? I think it’s an attitude more than a process or a status. It’ an attitude to become a better man or woman that matters.

Just my thoughts. Hope you can think about it.

  17. Definitely God will determine “perfection”. I believe God has someone planned for each of us, who will complement and edify us.

It is true that attitude matters, coz we have to look inward at ourselves. We have to prepare ourselves such that we are ready when God brings this person into our lives.

Finally to add. Yes, the perfect one might not be the right one, but the right one will eventually be the perfect one. I think that pretty much sums it up.

  18. Wow, another BGR-related post and this time I think it’s a record breaking number of comments!

I just saw the ad last night. Heartwarming indeed, and a li’l part of me hope I can be “emotionally stable” enough to make that kinda speech for my late hubby ;p

However, I feel that not finding the perfect one is not the main and only reason. I feel that most people are in fact happy and comfortable being single. If not, they would be diligently attending match-making sessions/singles parties etc.; there wouldn’t be a need for such a commercial…

But then again, maybe more singles are starting to “work hard”, therefore the shift in focus in this ad (not setting high standards instead of the usual “family is a joy!” message), so it could be true afterall that one chooses to be single because he/she hasn’t found The [Perfect] One.

Oh, I dunno… but this would be an interesting survey to do ;)

  19. i think its not a matter of lowering one’s expectations or not finding the perfect partner but rather, learning to love and appreciate someone for who they are and treasure every moment together. but in order to do that, you must first find someone whom you can actually bear to be with in the first place! haha

  20. Erm.. Who the hell is Megan Fox? Can’t they use Kylie? Haha. In my eyes, my gf beats even Kylie. =p

  21. I have no idea. I am a Evelyn Tan type of guy…

  22. Megan Fox was the girl in Transformers.

  23. Oh… very nice… yup she is hot…
