Anyone who’s followed Slam Dunk contests over the years would know that Rudy Fernandez’s first dunk was DEFINITELY worth more than the meagre 42 points the judges awarded him.
(And the commentators had the cheek to say “Yeah, that’s about a 42.” Are you kidding me?!?)
Anyway, there was absolutely no way that Dwight Howard’s first two dunks were 50s. It’s just crazy. Definitely a lot of bias going on there.
50s are given away too cheaply nowadays. Back in the ol’ days, 50s used to mean something. Like when they awarded a 50 to Michael Jordan’s “free throw line” dunk in 1988.
Now THAT was a 50 for the ages! (4:08 onwards in the clip below.)
So anyway, my point is that Rudy Fernandez definitely deserved more than the two 42s he got for the dunk contest. And Dwight Howard’s dunks were waaay over-rated. Nate Robinson was good though. Full credit to him. It’s amazing how high he gets up considering his small frame.
