Miss Singapore Universe Is “Too Old”?!? Give me a break!

This is appalling.

The headline on page 2 of today’s Life! section asks “Is She Too Old?” Full article (here).

To quote the first few lines from the article:

Is this year’s Miss Singapore Universe pageant jinxed? First, the live broadcast was axed. Now, it has produced Singapore’s oldest winner in 10 years
By Frankie Chee

IN A contest usually dominated by contestants from the airline industry or undergraduates who range in age from 18 to 22, the newly crowned Miss Singapore stands out on two counts – she is a foreign exchange broker and she is 26.

Miss Shenise Wong is the oldest winner of the Miss Singapore Universe title in the last 10 years and one year away from the age ceiling. The average age of past winners is 24.

The question on everyone’s lips now is: Is she too old to represent Singapore at the Miss Universe contest? After all, beauty contests are known for featuring sweet young things who look like they are fresh out of school…”

I think this “Frankie Chee” guy (whoever he is) is a bit too much.

Firstly, he suggests that the Miss Singapore Universe pageant might be “jinxed” because it has produced Miss Shenise Wong, the oldest winner in 10 years. Now “jinxed” is a horrible word to use on someone who has just won a MSU pageant.

If you can’t give the girl some credit, at least don’t slam her lah!

What has being the “oldest winner in 10 years” have to do with anything?!? Since when was age an issue here? Is Miss Shenise Wong any less of a winner because she is 26 years old?

And for goodness sake, she’s only 26!!! Are you saying a 26 year old girl can’t be Singapore’s most beautiful woman?

26!!! You gotta be kidding me!!! (Sorry…I just can’t get over it.) He thinks 26 is old!

Age has no correlation with beauty, my friend.

Anyway, does anyone have any idea how SPH screens through their writers? I certainly don’t.

This “Frankie Chee” guy actually spends half the entire article harping on Miss Shenise Wong’s age. Talk about missing the point altogether.

I know every writer needs an angle, but this is just ridiculous.

On another note, isn’t it sad that the MSU contest is no longer aired on national television?

I mean, it is THE contest to determine our nation’s most beautiful female, and you can’t find enough sponsors to justify broadcasting it to the whole of Singapore?

Don’t we deserve the right to watch the proceedings of the selection of Singapore’s representative to the Miss Universe pageant?

Don’t we deserve the right to totally scrutinise every single contestant from head to toe…including scrutinising every single word she utters during the Q&A segment, hoping for a “Miss Teen South Carolina” moment?

The MSU Q&A segment used to be one of the most entertaining reality moments on Singapore television every year, y’know. Unintentional comedy at its finest!

I say bring back the Miss Singapore Universe pageant on TV!

If they don’t even broadcast the MSU pageant on television, then I don’t know what Channel 5 is good for, to be honest.

(Boy, am I in a vitriolic mood today, haha!)

  2. Well said! Well said! … what has age got to do with beauty? A 40yr can also still look pretty.

“Anyway, does anyone have any idea how SPH screens through their writers? I certainly don’t….I know every writer needs an angle, but this is just ridiculous.” could be the editors, their boss etc etc. HA HA HA

On the contary about it not being televised, didnt you know it cost over $750,000.00 to produce? MCS wasnt a sponsor. My guess is that everyone got it wrong that MCS fully funded the whole production of it. Besides the point that they said viewership ratings were dropping etc etc, Advertisers/Sponsors/Clients these days arent forking out huge amounts of dollars for advertisements or promos like before. Some also diversed into other forms of directions.

DSP merged with MCS years ago when mediaworks was formed (sad that they didnt survive). Before it being aired, all its beauty pageants were ground events like clubs and gala dinnners.

Yes it is sad to hear that there still isn’t much support nor response from our local scene even after the articles were published. Hopefully it will!

  3. Miss Teen South Carolina answered that question badly, but she’s still got her looks to fall back on…

  4. Well Said!! I must say this Frankie Chee is ridiculous, look up Shenise Wong .. Beauty is written on her everywhere and I must say she is 1 of the best representative to date. and Goodness.. Old?? He must be joking!

  5. Hi, I came across your website randomly to read about MSU. I was wondering if you would be so kind to share your opinion on the MSU pageant vs. MSW pageant? I’m not from Singapore, but I get the impression that MSU is much more popular/reputable than MSW. I thought that the Miss World pageant in England seemed more impressive than USA’s Miss Universe, therefore finding it interesting that MSU is more popular? Please correct me if I am wrong….

  6. Hi Elle,

By “MSW” I’m assuming you mean “Miss Singapore World”. As far as I’m aware, the MSW pageant hardly gets any publicity here in S’pore. (I’m not even aware if there is a pageant here in the first place. That’s how low-profile it is over here).

Yup, over here the MSU contest is definitely much more popular. It used to be televised on national TV every year, but I think in recent years they’ve stopped televising it due to lack of sponsorship. As such, I believe the popularity of the MSU contest might have taken a hit.

But it is still far more well-known than the MSW pageant (if it exists).

  7. I had created some similar question a year ago. Around my experience, the best solutions are patient and confident. Be realistic bravely, and that you will be alright at last.

  8. I did not read Frankie Chee’s article but if he kept harping on 26 being old he sounds like one of those dirty old men that frequents teen porn sites. So his opinion just doesn’t count.
I don’t know how articulate Shenise Wong is but from her pictures she certainly looks good. She projects charisma and sophistication which a younger contestant may not have.
