The Leap Years: Whimsical!
Monday, 17 March, 2008

(Movie Trailer) Ok now that I’ve got your attention, let me launch into my review proper. “The Leap Years” is a locally-made movie that recently launched on the 29th of Feb with much publicity. It is based on a novella (what is a novella?!?) by esteemed local writer Catherine Lim, and is based on the [...]

Anatomy Of A New Song (This Week)
Friday, 14 March, 2008

Monday (morning) – Take a cold morning shower. Decide to start writing a song this week. Musical idea develops under the showerhead. Hmm, this could work. Monday (the rest of the day) – Musical idea churns. “Feel” of the song established. Lyrical ideas develop. Many parts still sketchy, but general idea is there. Tuesday (day) [...]

My Favourite Unfinished Song
Thursday, 13 March, 2008

Sure, we all have our favourite songs. But do you have a favourite “unfinished” song? To me, the most beautiful unfinished song I’ve ever heard is the one in “My Fair Lady” where Freddy Eynsford-Hill sings: “Speak, and the world is full of singing, and I am winging higher than the birds, touch and my [...]

“We Are The World” By The Japanese
Wednesday, 12 March, 2008

You’ve got to be familiar with the original “We Are The World” video to fully appreciate how absolutely hilarious this Japanese version is. They’ve got every singer’s nuance and idiosyncrasy down pat. Couldn’t stop laughing! I personally loved the “Stevie Wonder” the best. (“Bruce Springsteen” was awesome too.)

However, today I was thrilled to stumble upon it on someone’s blog. (Link) Basically it started when a writer named Sandra Leong [...]

“Jukebox Musicals”
Thursday, 6 March, 2008

It’s sad, so sad. It’s a sad, sad situation. And it’s getting more and more absurd. There was this article in Tuesday’s New Paper on the current trend in Broadway and West End musicals called “jukebox musicals” which I thought was really interesting. You can read it from the link below: “Who’s Afraid of Pop [...]

Songfacts.com Interviews Lisa Loeb
Thursday, 6 March, 2008

(This post is taken from the Songcraft blog.) I recently had the most pleasant of surprises when Carl Wiser from songfacts.com (one of my favourite websites, by the way) emailed me out-of-the-blue to inform me of this interview which they recently did with Lisa Loeb, where she talks candidly about her songwriting process as well [...]

“Song For Whoever” By The Beautiful South
Tuesday, 4 March, 2008

How can you not love a tune like this? “Jennifer, Alison, Phillipa, Sue, Deborah, Annabel too (I forget your name)…” … p.s. Oh by the way, the opening line is “I love you from the bottom of my pencil case…” What in the world does that mean???
