Great Sports Weekend

It was a fantastic sporting weekend.

Firstly, the Australia-England quarterfinal was great. Top-class rugby at its best. You could see the ferocity in the tackles. England (or more specifically Johnny Wilkinson) once again broke the hearts of the Aussies, the way they did the last Rugby World Cup final back in 2003. I reckon too many turnovers killed the Wallabies’ chances yesterday.

Then there was the news this morning that France pulled off a stunning upset of the All Blacks. (The match was at 3am this morning, hence I didn’t watch.) How in the world did that happen? I hate to say this, but even Argentina could beat France in this year’s RWC…why not the All Blacks? But then again, the ball is round. Or maybe not. You can put that down as yet another disappointing World Cup outing for New Zealand. I really felt they could have won it this year. They are quite simply the most talented & entertaining side in all of rugby. Unfortunately, they tend to under-deliver at the big occasions.

Thirdly, there was today’s astonishing Chinese GP. Extraordinary events, I tell ya. All Lewis Hamilton had to do was score some points ahead of Alonso to win the WDC…and honestly, it didn’t appear that difficult taking into account the fact that he was leading the opening stages of the race by as much as 8sec over Kimi Raikkonen. But whaddya know, he goes and beaches himself in the gravel trap at the pit-lane entry. Simply unbelievable. Ah well, at least we’ll have an intriguing Brazillian GP to look forward to. It’s going down the wire. But I still highly fancy Hamilton’s chances of taking the WDC. I guess I’ll just have to wait a few more weeks to pen my tribute to Hamilton the next WDC.
