Is The Dream Still Alive?

So has anyone been following “Live The Dream”? Y’know, the what-I-would-call ”Singapore Idol for Older People” talent contest?

As I said before, “Live The Dream” is basically a clone of the “Idol” franchise, just that they avoided paying the franchise fees by giving it a new name and by opening the contest to more mature contestants. Everything else is plain copied to the very last detail…from the show’s format, to the presentation style, to the sms-voting system, to the results show, etc.

Even two of the three judges are from Singapore Idol, for goodness sake!

I haven’t really been following “Live The Dream” closely, but I’ve been catching a few episodes here and there.

Firstly, I have to say they’ve chosen three VERY good-looking presenters for the show – Andrea Fonseka, Michelle Chia and Utt. (That must have been one of the producers’ strategies to ensure good ratings.) However, that being said, one has to suspect that these three presenters were chosen based on their looks and not much else…because a large part of their presenting & banter with the judges & contestants did come across as being rather awkward and unnatural.

Secondly, how good is this show really? Seriously…I mean, how many more of such “vote-or-your-idol-gets-thrown-out-of-the-competition” talent shows do we need? To be honest, I didn’t think many of the bands that performed tonight were that fantastic. I’m not trying to be mean, but I think you can find better bands at places such as Timbre, Pump Room and Wala Wala. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying the bands on “Live The Dream” are lousy. I just think that they aren’t exactly outstanding.

So overall, how would you say “Live The Dream” has fared? Well personally, I don’t think most people actually bother about this show that much. I don’t think it has garnered half…even one quarter the interest that Singapore Idol did. (Cos it didn’t capture the crucial teenage market.)

But good effort nonetheless. At least there’s a show on TV which showcases local music talent!
