We all know full well the great Beatles hits such as “Let It Be”, “Hey Jude”, “Yesterday”, “I Want To Hold Your Hand”, “She Loves You”, “In My Life”, “Can’t Buy Me Love”, “Ticket To Ride”, “The Long and Winding Road”, “All You Need is Love”, etc (I could go on).
However, there’s one particular Beatles song which I am extremely fond of. It is a song which I suspect might be one of the more underrated and overlooked songs in the entire Beatles catalogue.
And it also happens to be one of my all-time favourite Beatles tracks.
I remember first listening to this back in my secondary school days. Back then my dad bought the special box set of Beatles EPs, and I went through all 15 of them, one by one. (It was one of the most intense musical experiences I’d ever encountered.)
And on one particular disc, there was this song – “I’ll Follow The Sun”.
The actual track lasts less than 1:53, but it’s pure quality (Beatles songs tended to be short anyway.)
To me it’s one of those “perfect songs” – great ”feel” (almost folkish, I would say), great melody (slightly wistful, slightly pensive…yet lined with a touch of optimism), nice simple slide guitar solo (simple, but effective), fantastic vocals and harmonies (as always), and great lyrics.
I remember being struck by the simplicity and attractiveness of the song. It had such an endearing quality to it.
I wonder why this song isn’t as popular as it should be.
