Brendan Hansen Defends 100m Breaststroke World Title

The latest showdown in what is one of the most intriguing rivalries in world swimming has seen Brendan Hansen emerge as 100m breaststroke victor over staunch rival Kosuke Kitajima in the World Championships in Melbourne.

The time is not especially quick (Hansen clocked 59.80), but it’s a world championship victory nonetheless. He split his first 50m at 27.67.

Kitajima earned the silver in 59.96.

However, Kitajima still owns the 2004 Olympic gold in both the 100m and 200m…which I believe is what eats at Hansen the most.

Meanwhile speed-demon Roland Schoeman blazes a trail with a time of 23.18(!) in the 50m butterfly. I dare say he is the fastest human being in water over 50m at the moment.
