A Year the Greats Retired
Sunday, 31 December, 2006

This year we had a number of sporting greats retire.

Zinedine Zidane
He possessed a certain grace and elegance in his playing, and you couldn’t help but sit back and marvel in awe at some of the skills he displayed.
He was certainly a class apart.
The best Zidane goal I remember watching is the volley he scored for Real Madrid in the 2002 final of the [...]

Placido Domingo, Maestro
Saturday, 30 December, 2006

A friend of mine recently alerted me to an article in the Life! section about Tan Dun’s “The First Emperor” premiering at the Metropolitan Opera in New York, with Spanish tenor Placido Domingo playing the title role.
The article also talked about how Placido Domingo, in his long and illustrious career, has mastered an extraordinary 124 starring roles(!).
So [...]

The Nativity Story
Friday, 29 December, 2006

I watched The Nativity Story at the cinemas recently.
You can read the reviews here, but here are my thoughts on the movie:
I really liked how the movie manages to flesh out certain aspects of the nativity story, aspects which I normally tend to just gloss over when reading the Bible.
It highlighted certain scenes of the story [...]

Christmas ‘06
Monday, 25 December, 2006

Have a blessed Christmas everyone.

And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you [...]

Men Are From Mars
Saturday, 23 December, 2006

Maybe Professor Higgins had a point after all when he sang “Why Can’t A Woman Be More Like A Man?”
Our point of view is that the fairer sex tends to be over emotional, and prone to bouts of unpredictable moodswings.
They however, would say that we are unfeeling and insensitive.
It all depends on whose point of view you [...]

A Perfect Night’s Sleep
Friday, 22 December, 2006

Some nights, the weather’s just perfect (like the last few cool, windy, rainy nights) and in the morning when you get up at 8am (my usual waking-up time) you tell yourself, “boy, that was a fantastic sleep I had last night.”
I had such a night two nights ago.
It doesn’t happen really often, usually once in a [...]

Back Then, There Was Music…
Monday, 18 December, 2006

There was a time when musicians created good music, much unlike the nauseating stuff that emanates from our radio these days.
This was a time before I was born…what many would consider the “golden age” of popular music.
As such, I enjoy revisiting the music of the 60’s and 70’s (especially so the 60’s)…going through my father’s old records, searching YouTube [...]

Lunch @ Buko Nero
Monday, 18 December, 2006

I had lunch at Buko Nero (which means “a hole in the wall”) last Friday, as recommended by my lovely foodie colleague who made the reservation and brought me there together with a few other wide-eyed colleagues.
If it were not for her, I would never have known about this restaurant, which serves Italian-Asian-fusion kind of [...]

My Brand New Pride And Joy
Monday, 18 December, 2006

Just bought a new synthesizer a few days ago.
It’s a KORG X50 Music Synthesizer, and has 512 programmed sounds.
Really excited about it.

Jack and the Bean-Sprout!
Sunday, 17 December, 2006

I watched Wild Rice’s latest production, Jack & The Bean-Sprout! at the Drama Centre Theatre @ National Library recently.
Billed as “the GINORMOUS musical adventure”, this hilariously witty little musical (oh, maybe I shouldn’t use the word “little” in this case) is written by Desmond Sim, directed by Jonathan Lim, and features yet more original compositions [...]
