“Ladbrokes” (What’s in a name?)

Ladbrokes is in the news recently because they are in talks to buy 888, and online gaming firm.

Ladbrokes is the second-largest bookmaker in the UK.

Is it just me, or has anyone ever seen the irony in the name “Ladbrokes”?

To me it connotes “the lad becomes broke”. (And Ladbrokes is a gambling house…geddit?)

Believe me, I’ve had that notion for the longest time.

So, it begets the question – What’s in a name?

Not much apparently, if a company by the name of “Ladbrokes” can still become the UK’s second-largest bookmaker.

  1. Haha…I came across Ladbrokes two days ago at work, and I wondered who on earth came up with this ‘brilliant’ name…..gotta give it to him…
